For the past two years I have been a member of University Singers and I’m ready to tell everyone all about it! The University Singers group at Urbana University lets students with an interest in vocal music carry on their passion. Our director is Mr. Robert Marks, and he definitely keeps us all in line! There are no auditions to be in University Singers and it is open to any students of our school. We perform at various events at Urbana and in the community such as Winter and Spring Commencement, Spring Awards Convocation, “Christmas On Campus,” and our ever so popular fall and spring concerts. We work on MANY pieces of music throughout the year, which include pieces from the spring musical that we participate in. Along with University Singers there is also a side group called the University Chamber Singers. Members of this group are University Singers that audition and have extra rehearsals that they attend. I have not been able to be in Chamber Singers because of my athletic training class schedule.
Being in University singers has enabled me to meet new people outside of the athletic training students and student athletes that I’m around for most of my time. If I can only say one thing about University singers, it would be that we have SO much fun in what we do! Even though we have a lot of pieces of work that we learn and go through over and over again each rehearsal, we are still able to have a good time with each other. We even tend to have some inside jokes in our group that make sense to no one else…. seal sandwich… haha!
We have our rehearsals at The Hub on campus which actually use to be the old student center. It’s such a cool little building with so much character. I love how the walls are painted black right now and there are quotes written up for people to read.
Our first concert will be out fall concert, where we will be singing the new pieces we are learning along with some beautiful Christmas tunes! You all should come check us out on Sunday December 2nd in the Sarah Landis Room of the Student Center! The show starts at 3:00 p.m. and we’d really appreciate it if some students came out! What better way to get out of the December cold, taking a study break, and relaxing before semester exams? Hope to see everyone there!!
